Between Larzac and Pic, 150 m high. Syrah, Grenache and Carignan - no Mourvèdre. Pungent liqueur fruit and furniture glue leads a bold charge out the glass. This one comes at you jousting! Sharp and prickling and cough syrup and liquorice. Then there's a mid-palate pause and sweet blackcurrant pastille and menthol fill the mouth, as if to apologise for all that upfront aggression. Dominant tannins, not brutish, but they prevail. Lovely length

Winemaker Fabien Murail is the brains behind the intriguing, Le Clos des Chaumes Fiefs Vendeens Blanc, a blend of 60% chenin blanc and 40% chardonnay . Which, obviously, results in fulsome aromas of baked white fruit which carry some mineral interest too. This wine is richer than Kanye West's piggy bank, with a stonefruit hit across the palate. Some apple freshness trails in across the mid-palate and finish in this cracking foodie wine that would be able to handle all manner of bits and bobs.

 A big and bountiful Californian red blend of 80% Zinfandel, with 10% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Sirah, blended and matured for 16 months in American oak. Creamy, spicy and voluptuous on the nose, there's tons of blueberry and plum fruit, before the palate that is sweet-fruited and Christmas-cake spiced, rich and full, but with a fairly firm tannin background and cherry-pit acidity giving more spice and savouriness on the finish. A juicy steak or anything from the chargrill with this one.
