A generous wine. Intense nose though restrained in its youth, with dark cherries and liquorice. On the palate, the wine shows its power and structure with a mouthful of fruits and an overall manly appeal. Sound and good finish.

This organically-certified Pinot comes from a producer new to me, located between Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges, where Jean-Louis is assisted by his sons Frédéric and Laurent. It has quite a deep but not opaque colour, and a charming nose: firm and cherry scented, with briar and a hint of gamy perfume, but there's a ripeness and succulence to the fruit quality too. In the mouth there is good sweetness to the fruit, but it is sappy and lithe, a little spicy, smooth tannins and very nicely balanced juicy acidity, for a lovely glass of Burgundy that will cellar for several years.

Beautiful aromas of smoky green apple, cool wet stones. Steely tension between high-strung citrus acidity and white-peach fleshiness. Tight as a violin string, vibrating with fine energy. Long and lean, a mouthwatering green line from start to finish.

Pale, limpid colour with green glints. This dry white wine expresses aromas of slightly spicy fresh fruit (apple), with white flowers (springtime hawthorn, acacia). With age, it develops a bouquet of honey and amber. It goes well with a hot starter, like melted goat’s cheese pastries “en aumônière” or light fish dishes, grilled or baked “en papillote”. Serving temperature: 12 to 14°C. Drink between 2 and 6 years, even longer, depending on specific vintage and personal taste.

90% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo, 5% Graciano. 30 months in barrel. Smells of toast, leather, spicy roasted nuts. A portcullis of tannins, but there is fruit craning through the bars. Layers of prunes, dried cranberries and cherries, and dark chocolate. Some creaminess and lots of very ripe, crumbling tobacco leaves. Spiced cigar on the finish. (TC)

A fresh chardonnay that opens with bright herbs and apples. Yet, the medium-bodied palate is quite soft, even though the bright fruit is crunchy and appetizing on the finish. Drink now.

Forget the oceans of cheap 'blush' Zinfandel produced in California. This red wine grape is also capable of deep, big-scaled, full-throttle reds of which this 15.4% alcohol behemoth is one example. From old, old vines in Lodi - up to 120 years old - it is barrel fermented and aged. Inky-dark crimson, the nose is smoothly suffused with chocolate and berries, a little floral top note adding interest. In the mouth it is luscious and full. The alcohol is well-handled; it's there alright, adding some heat and volume, but the plushness of the fruit and lip-tingling spice and acidity is a counterweight. Not for everyone, but if you like the sound of it, it's a wine that delivers.

Classic Coonawarra Cab in many ways, from Terra Rossa soils and Hollick's the oldest blocks, the wine matured in French oak. Leafy and herbal edge flit around the aroma on first opening. Blackcurrant and something definitely meaty emerges. In the mouth the sheer sweetness surprises. Assuming this has negligible residual sugar, it must be the decadent ripeness of the black fruits captured in the glass. Tannins are firm, and along with 14.9% declared alcohol, do give a slight heat but plenty of grip. That sweet fruit drives the finish rather than oak, and the crispness of the tannins alleviates the meaty structure of the wine.
